Diu, located off the Saurashtra coast, near the Veraval port in Gujarat is a popular tourist destination, known for its pretty beaches, forts, parks and churches. Occupying an area of about 40 square kilometres, the population of Diu is 52,074 according to the census carried out in 2011. Diu Municipal Council

Daman and Diu was granted the independent status of a union territory in 1987.  The Diu Municipal Council or the DMC was established in the year 1613 and is one of the oldest municipalities in Asia. Under Portuguese rule it was called ‘Camara Municipal De Dio’. The administration was carried out based on the rules and regulations framed by the Portuguese called as the ‘Estuato’ and the members were called as ‘Vogal’. Today there are 13 elected Councillors in Diu Municipal Council out of which there are 8 males and 5 female members. Various functions performed by the Diu Municipal Council include transport, sanitation, street lights, maintenance of parks and gardens, issue of trade and construction licenses, registration of births and deaths, implementation of various schemes that are sponsored by the Indian Government.

Daman and Diu being a union territory, an administrator appointed by the president is responsible for its administration. Administrator of Daman and Diu is assisted by the collector in discharging his duties.
